How SLO works for you

Enhancing the climate for local economic development is among the City of San Luis Obispo’s top priorities. That’s not just a claim, it’s a commitment.

The city launched its Economic Development program in 1995 in order to encourage the creation of a diverse, stable, high paying job market and seek to preserve the quality of life in San Luis Obispo. This program has been enhanced continuously since its creation and is led by the only city-level Economic Development manager in the county.

From business retention and expansion assistance to a quick response team for timely processing of permits and development review strategies, the city’s Economic Development services are intended to help local businesses be successful.

In late June 2011, the City Council approved the 2011-13 budget, in which the city allocated more funds towards economic development than ever before. This investment will help the city develop an Economic Development Strategic Plan, create an infrastructure phasing and financing strategy, and continue the public-private collaboration between the city, the county, Cal Poly, the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce and business community to support the creation of new head-of household-jobs.

Updated information on City's Strategic Plan

The next phase in preparation of the City’s five-year Economic Development Strategic Plan is a robust public outreach effort to ensure that the Plan is well-informed and the strategies are supported by the community. An important component of this outreach will be a series of public workshops aimed at informing community members about the project’s aims and engaging them on critical issues related to job creation and retention. Each workshop will have a distinct topic and audience focus that will drive small group discussions and brainstorming sessions. The goal of the first workshop is to generate interest in the project, inform the public of the project’s objectives and build a foundation for the plan. The focus of the subsequent workshops will be available on the website as it becomes available.

The workshop dates are:

• Thursday, April 19, 12:00-1:30 p.m., Senior Center
• Thursday, April 26, 12:00-1:30 p.m., Library Community Room
• The fourth and final workshop will occur in late June where the draft strategy will be reviewed

City staff is working to inform the community of the workshop details through channels such as the City website, slocity.com, and Facebook page, ads in The Tribune and on their website, sanluisobispo.com, and through the Steering Committee representatives’ organizations, which include the Chamber of Commerce, Cal Poly, the Economic Vitality Corporation, the United Way, the Downtown Association and various local businesses.
